And that’s just one wingtip.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

You could also just have rockets if you prefer.

It’s like the Bugs Bunny cartoon where he and Yosemite Sam keep coming back with larger handguns.

Looks a bit like the Lego spaceships I built as a kid. Pointy thing to the front are missiles and lasers! Everything in the back is rockets!

Hey guys I think we need more rockets!

That must have been one hell of a beefy wing spar.

Hats on the flightline?! That’s it... I’m calling QA.

The F89H had what might be called a “checkered” history

The only time it launched its many rockets in “anger,” the results were less than desirable

Remember, though, that those rockets were meant to be fired into a formation of big Russian bombers, where you’re bound to hit something . Hitting a wayward F6F would be much harder.

Should not... but this was a few decades ago when the Air Force wasn’t up its own ass with nonsense rules and regulations. They could probably even get away with *gasp* putting their hands in their pockets!

Actually, hanging a bunch of weight outboard on a wing reduces the bending moments at the root when in flight, and flight loads >>>tarmac loads.

From wiki ... “, and notably the first combat aircraft armed with air-to-air nuclear weapons ” Whaaaaaaaat??? That would be nuts!

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > Mattbob
10/05/2016 at 12:53

Kinja'd!!!1

Yup. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to launch an unguided nuclear rocket into the middle of a fleet of Russian bombers. One shot, many kills. “To ensure simplicity and reliability, the weapon would be unguided since the large blast radius made precise accuracy unnecessary.” In other words, close enough for horseshoes, hand grenades and atomic bombs. The ICBM, however, rendered moot the entire concept of waves of Russian bombers attacking the US.

First of all, congrats again on getting that dream job of yours!

Could you comment on why we have the “National” Guard in our military ? What is the use for the “Air” Guard? Shouldn’t that all be under the (Federal) military jurisdiction? Or does it already? I think the structure is to have a military officer who reports to the Governor of a state, but still reports to the Federal military?

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > d15b

I’m not sure I can adequately answer that question. Of course, the idea of a National Guard goes back to the days of the Revolutionary War. So having an Air Guard is merely an extension of that. My understanding is that the Air Guard would provide protection to the home front while the active duty Air Force was away on deployment. Guard units are under dual jurisdiction of both the Federal government and the states in which they are based. You can get a much better explanation here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Guard_of_the_United_States

And thanks! It’s been a long time coming.

Eh, it does make a twisted kind of sense, given what they knew about nukes and what they thought they’d be facing. Now, the Davy Crockett ? That shit was nuts .
